From 2009 through to 2011 Australia celebrates the centenaries of many Australian Aviation firsts, Taylor, the first heavier than air glider flight, (December 1909), The first attempts and mixed results at powered flight, by Defries, Wittber, Banks and Custance (December 1909 - March 1910), the first successful controlled and sustained powered flight in Australia - famed escapoligist Harry Houdini ( Diggers Rest Victoria - March 1910), the first flight of an Australian designed and built aircraft, John and Reg Duigan (Mia Mia Victoria - July 1910), while in 1911 JJ Hammond undertook the first passenger flights, the first paying passenger flight, and the first cross country flight in Australia (Altona Victoria - February 1911) HOUDINI Centenary - Commemorative Plaque March 2010 sees the Centenary Celebrations of Harry Houdini's first successful, controlled and sustained powered flight in Australia.
HOUDINI Centenary - Other Celebrations/Events Harry Houdin, (Ehrich Weiss) the famed American escapoligist came to Australia in 1910 with his own aircraft and mechanic as part of his Australian tour of escapes and death defying feats, in March 1910 at Diggers Rest he flew the first successful, controlled and sustained flights in Australia. The museum is participating and supporting a number of other events in association with the Melton Shire Council and the Diggers Rest community, including the Festival of Flight Commemorative Ceremony of the flight, Thursday 18th of March, the Houdini Centenary Airshow Saturday 20th of March, and the Festival of Flight community celebrations at Diggers Rest on Sunday 21st. - 18th, 20th and 21st March
JULY
Duigan Centenary - Other Celebrations/Events John Duigan and his brother Reg researched, experimented, designed and built Australia's first indigenous aircraft over the period of 1909 to 1910 and July 2010 sees the Centenary Celebrations of the first flight of that aircraft. The museum is participating and supporting a number of other events in association with the Duigan family, the Duigan Centenary of Flight - 2010 Replica project, the Bendigo City Council and the Mia Mia community, including the Commemorative Ceremony of the flight, Friday 16th of July at Mia Mia, and the Australian Centenary of Powered Flight community celebrations at Mia Mia. - 16th, 17th & 18th July
AUSTRALIAN CENTENARY OF POWERED FLIGHT

FRIDAY 16TH JULY
The official opening of the weekend activities will be on the afternoon with the unveiling of a Permanent History Board at the Duigan Monument, adjoining the site of the historic flight. A flyover by the Roulettes is timed at 3 p.m. SATURDAY 17TH JULY All Day Flying Activities at the Mia Mia Oval: -- The Replica of the original Duigan Biplane will be on display. It is anticipated that this aircraft will taxi and fly a short distance, depending on the limitations of the oval. Display of antique aircraft. Fly Past of antique, model and modern aircraft to be organized by the Kyenton Aero Club. Display of Radio controlled model planes. Helicopter joy rides, Hot Air Balloon rides. Paper plane building with a flight competition. Finals of the Aerospace Challenge. The heats will be conducted on the morning of Friday 16th at the Mia Mia oval. In a large marquee, local wine and food will be shown. In the evening a black tie dinner will be held in a marquee at the oval, proceeds from which to go to The Flying Doctor Service. Sunday 18th July Ecumenical Church Service will be held in the Mia Mia Church at which a RAAF chaplain will preside. Further Enquiries may be made to Australian Centenary of Powered Flight P.O. DUIGAN Centenary - Commemorative Plaque July 2010 sees the Centenary Celebrations of the Duigan brother's first flight of an Australian designed and built aircraft.
The museum is dedicating a plaque to commemorate that event, at the museum at 3pm, Saturday 24th of July, members, and museum visitors are invited to attend and celebrate this important centenary- refreshments available.
AUGUST
Volunteer Open Day - Free Entry On Sunday 15th August the Australian National Aviation Museum will be holding an Open Day - offering free entry to the General Public, to promote the activities of volunteer, community and learning centres throughout the City of Kingston.
Local Community groups and their members, are being invited to attend the museum for free, and to present displays of their activities. Also attending will be City of Kingston Mayor, Steve Staikos, and Councillors, the (Rt.) Hon. Simon Crean, M.P., Minister for Education, Mark Dreyfus, M.P., the Hon. Jenny Lindell, M.H.R., and Janice Munt, M.H.R. We look forward to the opportunity to engage and support other volunteer groups and organisations in the Kingston community. - Sunday 15th August

Aviation Museums Forum In October our museum hosts a gathering of Australia's Aviation Museum's in a forum weekend to discuss developments and co-operation to further the preservation of Australia's Aviation Heritage. - 2nd / 4th October Aviation Museums Forum - Members BBQ- Museum members are invited along to a BBQ to meet the visiting delegates to the Aviation Museum Forum being held at the Museum, and to view the rare historic and exotic automobiles assembled as part of the "Wings and Wheels" Vintage Car Show.
